2012 Season Kick Off! 1st Quarter

Dear Tennis Member:

Here's to a new year and some great tennis ahead!  Our main focus of this letter will be to communicate the first quarter of events of the season, January-March.  We hope you will find this year's schedule full of events that you will want to participate in and support.  One change you may notice is the reduction of some spring events, due to the higher impact of the USTA adult, senior, and super senior season.  (See schedule) You will notice on the bottom of the schedule that there are several new events added, all currently without dates.  Stay tuned for more information and dates!  You also will be glad to see the earlier date for Wimbledon at Pinehurst this year, ensuring some milder temps.

Click on any of the "Quick Links" below for more information on each topic, or scroll down the page. If there are any questions on any of the events or anything new you would like to see this year please let the staff know. Our goal is to continue to provide the best activities and experience for our members and their guests.

See you on the Courts,
Matt Downing, Director of Tennis

TLC Committee
or Tennis, Lawn Bowls, Croquet

Some may not know that the Board of Governors of Pinehurst has a club committee dedicated to tennis, lawn bowls, and croquet.  This years committee members are chaired by, Gary Evans; his assistant, Merle Lewis; Lawn Sports Director, Ron Lloyd; PTA president, Connie Petrillo; Croquet President, Russ Hanson; Lawn Bowl President, George Tucker;  Matt Downing; and tennis member, Donna Honeycutt.  The committee meets once a month, primarily, to report past and upcoming event, changes in operations, and any member related issues.  If you have anything you would like to present at the meeting please plan to discuss it with myself or Connie Petrillo prior to meeting.  We will present to the committee and relay the feedback.   All minutes of the meetings are available through the members club.

New Member Orientation

Did you also know that the club provides New Member Orientations twice a month?  Each member related department head provides information to new members about their area.  This includes information about their sport, facility amenities, and how to get started. Each new member gets invited out by the staff and introduced to other members that can help with club integration.  To further inform new members, the tennis club offers a New Member Facility Tour which is scheduled for March 15th at the Tennis Club.

Winter Tennis

As the winter season sets in, you can still find plenty of opportunities to play if you're willing to play in the warmer part of the day or on a frozen court.  We allow those brave members to play at 8am on frozen court mornings until the courts thaw and become unplayable. Then you can switch to a hard court.  We also hope you will take advantage of our winter clinic schedule on Wednesday - Saturday from 10:30am-11:30am 3.0 level; and 11:30am -12:30pm 3.5-4.0 level.  Please note any court signage that may indicate unplayable court conditions.  The weather hotline continues to be the best way to get daily information on court conditions, 235-8566.

USTA League Tennis - Spring Season

This year we have a new local league coordinator, Ann Tucker 910-818-4590.
Ann has replaced long standing LLC, Ruth Bondurant who retired this past fall.  Ann is responsible for over 600 players and nine surrounding counties, wow!  She is excited about her new position and is ready to get as many league players on the court as possible.  Two captain meetings have already taken place in early January, but there is still plenty of time to get teams formed.  The team registration deadline is February 13th, with the team roster deadline extending through March 14th.  Available divisions are Adult (18-49), Senior (50+), and Super Senior (60+/ 70+).    The pro staff will be glad to schedule any league team clinics at a special rate of $50 per hour up to eight players.  See attached PTC Guidelines for detailed league team info.

PTA Pinehurst Tennis Association

This years PTA board consists of a variety of new and past board members.  President, Connie Petrillo, Charles Clayton, Jan Carey, Dave Jones (Diane's husband), Kathy Benarick, Jan Kuklok, Ray Barber, and Mary Scott Arnold.  Many of the events will remain the same as last year; which proved to be a successful season.   As always the new board will look to improve this year.  New board goals include: increased membership and participation, increased publicity (pilot, pictures, member website, etc...), and to provide a Sunday mixed doubles league, just to name a few.   March 13th will kick of their season with the "Opening Serve Luncheon" at the Members Club.  Their first Tennis Social will be Wednesday March 28th.  Applications to join the PTA are available at the tennis pro shop.  Some dates on schedule are subject to change, but should be minimal.
